Nietzsche Trail: a climb between sea and sky in Èze
Perched between sea and sky, the medieval village of Èze offers a unique experience on the Côte d'Azur. Among the natural treasures that surround it, the Sentier de Nietzsche (Nietzsche Trail) stands out as an emblematic hike, combining wild beauty and philosophical inspiration.
In the footsteps of Nietzsche
The Sentier de Nietzsche links Èze-sur-Mer to the perched village of Èze, over a distance of 2.1 km and a difference in altitude of 400 metres. This steep path, punctuated by steps and rocky passages, was taken by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche during his stays on the Côte d'Azur from 1883 onwards. It was during these walks that he found the inspiration to write the third part of his major work, “Thus Spake Zarathustra”.
A hike between land and sea
Departure is from Èze-sur-Mer, easily accessible from Nice by train or bus. All the way up, hikers can admire the view over the bay of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and the crystal-clear waters of the Côte d'Azur. The hike ends in Èze-Village, a charming medieval village renowned for its cobbled streets, local craftsmen and exotic garden offering panoramic views.
An unforgettable experience
The Sentier de Nietzsche is accessible all year round, but we recommend dry weather and suitable footwear. The route, although short, requires good physical condition due to its steep slope and irregular terrain. Allow 1h30 for the ascent and 45 minutes for the descent.
