Le Château de La Chèvre d'Or is a timeless place, filled with the magic of a legend that has been told many times.

In Provence La Chèvre d’Or or "Golden Goat" is a mythical animal that has inspired many tales, such as Paul Arène's novel “La Chèvre d’Or”, published in 1889. Legend has it that in Eze, the Yugoslavian violinist Zlatko Balokovic, who was visiting the village, allowed himself to be led by a goat with a golden coat to an old farmhouse, which he restored to create the famous Château de la Chèvre d’Or.
But legends abound in this place, which is steeped in history; according to one of them, the Relais & Châteaux hotel owes its name to its first owner. A farmer by trade, she reared goats, whose milk she used to sell each week in the market in Nice; apparently she used to hide her income, all in gold pieces, behind the stones of a wall. When the building was restored, her treasure, which had lain untouched for years, was found.

The hotel was then named after the treasure trove to keep the story alive.

The Chèvre d’Or is a star in its own right, a unique jewel that sparkles high up over the Mediterranean. The passion and culture it has inherited from its pioneers have sent it soaring skywards to become part of the finest hotel association in the world. In 1953, Robert Wolf fell in love with Le Château de La Chèvre d’Or and converted it into a restaurant. He then bought a number of houses in the village to provide accommodation. The hotel became one of the six stops on the "Route du Bonheur", which later became the Relais et Châteaux Association.

The hotel's various owners since then have all increased the number of rooms dotted around the mediaeval village. As a result, Le Château de La Chèvre d’Or now has 36 rooms and suites.

The restaurant was awarded its first star in the Michelin Guide thanks to the work of Mr Pernet. Elie Mazot, who took over in the kitchens, was to maintain its excellent reputation and its Michelin star for over 20 years. Jean Marc Delacourt took over from Elie Mazot in 1998 and further recognition was quick to follow, with the restaurant being awarded its second Michelin star in 2000. In 2003, a young and talented chef, Philippe Labbé joined to maintain the 2 Michelin stars. 2009-2010 will see some great developments in the kitchen side...!

Princes and princesses, artists, politicians and actors including Walt Disney, Lauren Bacall, Marlene Dietrich, Elizabeth Taylor, Marisa Berenson, Humphrey Bogart, Roger Moore, Tony Curtis, Clint Eastwood and Robert de Niro have all stayed at Le Château de La Chèvre d’Or.
